I use a MS mouse with a wheel, problem:
Most of the time the wheel will zoom, BUT sometimes it starts to
scroll up and down, it does it on it's own without me changing any
settings in the mouse or autocad options/settings. anyone know how and
why this happens? It seems completely random.
    Thanks

Removing scroll bars from your screen solved the problem in some instances.

I tried that, then it would not scroll or zoom with mouse wheel,
almost seems there's a setvar controlling it but I can't seem to find
it, I tried searching setvars; scr*, zoom* etc.
    stumped!
    Thanks

Does your cursor change shape? If so, it may be that you've pressed a
little too hard on the wheel and switched the mouse mode from zoom to
    scroll.

nope, it's totally random (well probably not) I cannot figure out what
    is toggling it.
    Stumped.......

Yep, I have the same problem.

Usually have to save the drawing, close and re-open. Mainly happens
straight after opening a drawing. (But can also happen after a lot of
zooming in and out). Can usually avoid it by viewing extents (on toolbar) on
    first view.

I cannot find any "mouse key settings" that change the middle wheel usage
from "scroll" to "pan/zoom" or vice versa.

Just thought I'd let you know you're not alone...
