We save our standard layer states for working in the drawing model. We haven't found a way to import them into a viewport in a second file that x-ref's the first because the layer name is no longer the same as it has the xref drawing name appended to it. Does anyone have a tool that would insert xref "wildcards" into the layerstate?

VISRETAIN would be the only way as Layer States don't use Wild cards. Using
VPLayer to compose plans in paperspace is a very limiting feature: all that
can be set is visibility ( not linetype, lineweight, color, etc.)

WhatI do is quite complicated but works flawlessly. I have a "Standards"
drawing with all my layers (700+) and all the possible layer states. By
utilizing ObjectDBX I scan the standards drawing and "read" a layer state
creating a list of layer names and properties. I then compare that list
against the one in the active docuemnt and make changes as needed. No
importing of Layer States, no Layer States saved in the active document.
This program does use wildcards, something that local Layer States can't.
