I have a test machine running Vista and succesfully added SWX07 and got it
to run well in compatibility mode. I am wondering if anyone has been able
to in place upgrade an XP machine and convert SW to 07 compatibility mode
    w/o an new install ?

    Dumb question here.
IF all you need is SW & what you already had WHY waste
the overhead of "compatibility mode" (there has to be
some, right?) & more bloatware just to use Vista?

The test machine running SWX in Vista seems to run just fine. In fact it
feels a bit faster. Also forget about logic here I am a tech junkie also.

Perhaps it just needs some fragmentation.

do you need a new service pack to run sw07 on vista? I tried loading
(spo) it on vista, and it won't run?

Not a service pack but the version of SW that is written for Vista. Call
your VAR or you should be able to download the version for Vista.

    Thanks for posting.

I did the same thing and it ran just fine until I started using SWX 07 with
a large solid file of a shape with a lot of vents and ribs and it just
dragged. Slower than in XP. While it runs it isnt really servicing the
complex part I needed it for at the moment so I am back to XP. At the
moment my work is mission critical so ther eisnt room for chance and when I
am rushed and biling hourly it isnt fair to the client either.

SW site has a Vista compatible pre-release download now. I downloaded
this version and installed on my Vista Home Pro laptop. Did not have
to change any OS settings, just ran w/o any problems. However, my
parts and dwgs are simple. I also need to upgrade to 2 GB RAM now
(from 1 GB RAM), since with everything running and working on a simple
part, I have about 75 KB RAM left :)..

gives new meaning to the term bloatware.

(blot´wãr) (n.) jargon Software that has lots of features and requires
considerable disk space and RAM. As the cost of RAM and disk storage has
decreased, there has been a growing trend among software developers to
disregard the size of applications. Some people refer to this trend as
creeping featuritis. If creeping featuritis is the symptom, bloatware is the
    disease.
