Curious. Has anyone installed SP2 for the XP operating system. How does it
    play with SWx?

Ansys just sent me an email telling me not to install the new SP right yet
because it was causing some problems...

  4. From what I've been told, 2004 SP5 and 2005 SP1.0 will support Windows XP
SP2. Until then, the SolidWorks installation program will not work
    correctly with SP2.

    Hope this helps.

    Good to know.

What SP of SWx are you using?

  6. In their little article they also said they weren't sure if Automatic Update
would make you do the update.
    Here is their article

from: EE Comunity Newsletter dated August 10 2004

Non-virus alert: We subscribe to a lot of webites, including Virus Alerts
for the Common Man (http://apcsnh.com/vacm). One of their recent emails said
the following: "Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) looks like it may "break" a
lot of existing software. The news we have at this point is that XP SP2 will
give you the choice of running a software product that may be lacking in
security or not. So, "break" is a relative term in this case. Time will
tell. Looks like SP2 will be out this fall and, we assume, Windows Update
will force it upon you. You have been warned."

I tried SP2 RC1 and everything worked o.k until I tried to upgrade my
SolidWorks from SP4.0 to 4.1. I kept getting an error message and it
would bomb out. Removed Win SP2 and went back to SP1 and everything was
then happy and upgraded without problem. I'm still having other minor
problems with Windows that I think may be attributed to SP2. Also found
that the defaults for SP2 is to have it's firewall active and that
killed my network connections until I did some tweaking.

  10. I should add that Windows SP2 had SWX turn up as a blocked application under
control panel - windows firewall - exception. It asks if you want to run
the program, check yes, and no problem. Easy fix.

UPDATED - Support for Microsoft Windows XP SP2

August 11th, 2004 - UPDATE: Support for Microsoft Windows XP SP2 will be
announced with SolidWorks 2005 SP1, not 2005 SP0 as originally
scheduled. The updated bulletin is as follows:

The production version of Microsoft Windows XP SP2 should be available
for download from Microsoft's web site sometime this week (w/e Fri 13th
August). SolidWorks plans to announce support for Windows XP
Professional SP2 with the release of 2005 SP1 and 2004 SP5, subject to
    successful QA testing.

Based on our testing of the XP SP2 Release Candidate (i.e. Pre-Release
version) we've seen the following issues:

    1) Upgrading a SolidWorks 2004 installation via Service Pack fails with
Windows Installer error 2753 on some machines running XP SP2 Release
    Candidate.

    2) There is a problem logging into a PDMWorks vault running Windows XP
SP2 from another other computer due to the new Windows Firewall that is
part of XP SP2. PDMWorks works correctly if communication is enabled
through the 3 ports that PDMWorks needs. To manually fix this on a vault
server machine running XP SP2, do the following: 1) Open
    Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Security Center 2) Click on Windows
Firewall 3) Click on the Exceptions tab 4) Click on Add Port... 3 times,
once each for the 3 PDMWorks ports - 20000 is the PDMWorks VaultAdmin
port, 30000 is the PDMWorks Data port and 40000 is the PDMWorks Request
port. Click OK, etc. and clients should be able to login to that
    machine's vault server now.

I've been using XP sp2 since I first got an early version of sw2005 mainly
due to the tooltip fubar in XP and SW's heavier reliance on tooltips.
SW2005 beta and PR have been pretty good on XP sp2, but if you use
Placeware, that will not work at all on my machine with XP sp2 rc1.

It may be time to reformat...
