X-Clip Polyline Self-intersecting Error

To create my X-clips I am first drawing a polyline and then using the
select polyline option inthe Xclip command. Almost everytime I do
    this I get this error:

Self-intersecting clip boundaries are not acceptable.

The polylines that I am using are not self-intersecting. They are
simple basically rectangular outlines with several insets. I have
tried creating the polyline using the close command and by just
snapping it closed. Both methods give the error. The second or third
time that I redraw the polyline (going CCW instead of CW, using
different start point etc.) the Xclip command ussually works for no
    apparent reason.

    What is causing this?
    Is there a work around?

    I am using Autocad 2000i with Win2000.

    Thanks Zachary Kane
