volume enclosed by surfaces

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by Bill Chernoff, Feb 3, 2005.

  1. I have a part made entirely of sweeps and lofts, and I want to make it into
a solid part. The "thicken surface command is not what I want, but in the
HELP for that topic, it says "click Create Volume from Enclosed Solid",
which is exactly what I want to do. Problem is, I can't find where to
"click Create....". What command/menu is it under?

    Thanks

    Bill

    Bill,
if all the edges of your surfaces are touching each other with no gaps (no
naked edges) then select all surfaces and use the knit feature with "try to
form a solid" marked - that will do it.

It is the same tool. If it doesn't work try a knit first.

    Insert>Body>Thicken
the option is in the thiken dialog

  4. If your surfaces don't completely enclose a volume, then the "Create Volume
from Enclosed Solid" isn't available in the "Thicken" command. Use the
"Check" tool to look for open edges.

Can anybody of you guys tell me for what is this knit/thicken combination of
features good for, when one can just as easily mark "try to form a solid" on
the knit feature on the first place?

    thanks,

I have wondered that myself but I always forget that the "Try to form a
    solid" is there.

  8. I think it's left over from the time when there wasn't a "Try to form a
solid" button in the knit feature.
