Hello gang! I am in the process of reviewing virtual private
networking for use on our projects for our offices. I was wondering if
anyone in this group has used these on projects especially using it on
large scale projects with large microstation drawing files. I'd like
to know any of your opinions on the effeciency of these networks. I
know that Viecom is available to use, but we were wanting to keep the
drawings on our own servers and let our consultants work from those.
Any information that you all could provide me with would be great!!
    Thanks so much in advance!

It sounds to me as though Liz wants end users to connect using a VPN and
open files on their server with MicroStation. I would think the performance
    would be very poor.

I put in a VPN at a design place with a 1mb ADSL connection. They're using
Autocad in this case. I think interactive design in Autocad is possible,
but difficult. The connection speed is just to slow and cumbersome. For
this particular application, it's more of a work-at-home application, rather
than a collaboration. They copy their files locally, work and then send
them back when done. In that context it works tolerably well, provided you
are not copying HUGE amounts of drawings (copying takes about a meg a minute
or something..). But to work as if it were simply a network drive is not
practical, at least at most connection speeds.

Works great for Word or other programs with small file sizes though..

    Cheers,

    Scott..
