Use Bitmap as template for drawing

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by Melanie Desaive, Jan 17, 2005.

  1. Hello,

I need to digitize a photograph to AutoCAD.

The way I know it works would be to use a digitizing board, fix the
photograph on it and digitize it.

Is it also possible to scan the photograph to a bitmap format and use it
in autocad as a "digital" template?
I know this works with some GIS-system, and would prefer this solution
    over buying new hardware.

    Thanks a lot,

    Greetings,

    Melanie

While you *could* use a digitizer, that's a tedious process. If it were me,
I'd scan the photo to a compatible format (e.g., tiff) then import it to
AutoCAD with the IMAGE command; scale it correctly (SCALE command, Reference
option) to 1:1, lock its layer, then simply trace over it with lines,
polylines, etc. as appropriate. When you're finished, you can then either
freeze the photo's layer, or simply remove (ERASE) the image.
