Understaning references?

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by Nathan Feculak, May 12, 2004.

  1. I don't quite have a good grasp on how references work in SW and it is
coming to bite me in the ass, big time. Can someone direct me in the right
direction as to where I can look to get a better understanding of
    references.

    Thanks

  4. I have done all the tutorials and I have completed the essentials
part, assemblies and drawing for SW 03. I am booked to take the advanced
training in July that is the soonest I could get in. I just ordered two book
from Amazon , Engineering design with SolidWorks 2004 and
    SolidWorks for designers release 2004.
I hope that the book will help!

There is a ton of stuff in the SW knowledgebase. It isn't easy to get
through because what you need to know is scattered about, but it is a must
    read.

There are a couple of API examples in your API help that will list
    references for assemblies.

And there is a product at www.dynabits.com that can visually show
    dependencies.

And of course there is SWExplorer which can be used to investigate
    references.

Besides all that you should take the time to understand how SW goes and
    finds referenced documents.

    Nathan,

As you dive into trying to understand references, and you are taking
an advanced assembly class in July, I would jump into Chapter 6 on Top
down design in Engineering Design with SW. Top down techniques are a
big portion of the advanced assembly class. Working back and forth
between parts in-context and assemblies will help you with your goal.

Download the SolidWorks Reference Guide 2004 - if you are on
subscription service and review Chapter 9, section on Working with
parts within an assembly, pg 9-42 through 9-48.

One of the biggest areas I find users sometimes forget is that
references play a big role in the drawing. For example, open an
assembly drawing and then try to save it to a different location. You
are required to select the References button in the Save As dialog
box. Insert multiple configurations and models into a drawing and the
properties in each view are different. If you want your note to
reflect the view, select the "Model in view in which the annoation is
attached" option. Example: My drawing contains Part A and Assembly
    B. Each model contains a different Mass Property. I want that
Property to display as a Linked Note under the different model view.

I wish you well with your quest. Regards, Marie
