Well my old trusty Alienware laptop has just bitten the dust -
graphics card has died! so I'm looking for a replacement and the spec
of this looks tasty and a snip at £2300.00

Has anyone got one and is using with SWX? Read spec below......

    Lenovo ThinkPad W700 - NRP75UK

If you've read the specifications of the W700 and are looking for one
of the most powerful notebooks on the market, you've probably already
realised that this is the model for you.

Boasting the world's highest performing dual core processor in the
form of the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 along with 4GB of RAM that can be
upgraded to a massive 8GB, the W700 is not a notebook for the light
user. This machine was built to be overclocked and tested to oblivion,
which maybe impossible given the specs on this machine.

Designed for digital content creators and users, the mobile
workstation's digitizer helps them easily configure an image, either
mapping it to the entire screen or to an area defined by you and high
performance users, especially digital photographers, will benefit from
this models built-in color calibrator. The calibrator automatically
adjusts the display's color in up to half the time of many external
calibrators and with higher accuracy, resulting in the most accurate,
true-to-life images in an integrated package. This is backed up by a
NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M graphics card with 512mb of dedicated memory.

And finally the incredible 17" screen has a resolution of 1920 x 1200
which, given that 1080P TVs only go upto 1920 x 1080, is proof that
the notebook has finally caught up with the desktop.

Throw in the 64 Bit version of Vista Ultimate so the full 4GB of RAM
is used and an XP Pro disc should you need to use the ever popular,
older operating system and you've got a machine that works harder than
    you. No really it does!

    Processor - Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300 / 2.53 GHz ( Quad-Core )
    RAM - 4 GB (installed) / 8 GB (max) - DDR3 SDRAM - 1066 MHz - PC3-8500
    ( 2 x 2 GB )
    Hard Drive - 200 GB Full Disk Encryption (FDE) - Serial ATA-150 - 7200
    rpm
Operating System - Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit Edition /
    XP Professional downgrade
    Screen - 17' TFT 1920 x 1200 ( WUXGA ) - 24-bit (16.7 million
    colours)
    Optical Drive - BD-Writer - removable plug-in module
    Graphics - NVIDIA Quadro FX 3700M - 1 GB
    Bluetooth - Yes
    Warranty - 3 years warranty

just bought a new laptop from dell M6400 covet wit with fx3700 1gb.
    i also considered the w700.
because we bougt more computers at once dell gave massive discount.
with almost the same specs as the you describe.
I wanted to use xp 64 bit, but mcafee security didnt accept that.
so went to vista64 bit and everything works fine ....EXEPT SOLIDWORKS 2009
    x64.
my var couldnt solve the problem, and the problem is under investigation for
3 days now in the US.
I am afraid to have to go back to XP 32 bit.

But anyway the laptop from dell has a keyboard that feels a bit crappy.
the dvd player makes a lot of noise .
So if i had the choise again , i would go for the lenovo W700.

    succes with your choise
    Bram

    Thanks Bram,
The M6400 was on my short list but I don't have the luxury of buying
more than 1 - so the W700 beat it on price.
Do you know if the x64 issue with SWX2009 is common with all brands -
    or is it just Dell?
While on the subject do you know if SWX 2007 and 2008 run OK as I
    still have clients using both?

    Cheers,

I'm not sure why, but SolidWorks has been slow to certfiy the newest
crop of mobile workstations. The W700 is ONLY certfied on XP-32.
    ThinkPad W700 nVidia Quadro FX 3700M WinXP 6.14.11.7655 11/11/2008
    2009

The Dell M6400 was just certified for Vista-64 and XP-64 in late
November. The recommended drivers are the same for both the 2700m and
    3700m graphics.
    Vista 7.15.11.7653 10/03/2008 2009

    WinXP x64 6.14.11.7653 11/19/2008 2009

The HP 8730w has been certified for all four OS's for awhile.

I found out what the error was.
Service pack1 from sw 2009 messed the installation up.
after deleting and reinstalling sw 2009 the problem was solved.
I will stay on sp0 and everything should be ok.

the performance increase of x64 over x32 is very small.
and i think that because the Vista OS takes up a lot of memory.
Maybe a xp32 system may outperform the vista system.
I dont think you will have problems with Sw2007 and 2008.

    cheers

    Great,
I think I might just go and order the W700 now then.
