SWX2004 - 512 or 1024 RAM ?

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by IDAssociates Inc., Dec 18, 2003.

  1. I am trying to address some of the slowness in 04 SP0. Running an Athlon XP
    2400 with 512 of DDR 2100, a GeForce 3 classic, and a WD 7100 with 8 meg
cache. IS there any advantage to going to 1024 ?

  2. If you commonly use large files that require that much RAM, then more is
better. There's a point of diminishing returns, but 1 GB is not there yet.

Keep an eye on your memory usage using the Task Manager. Once your page
file usage approaches around that 512 border you'll start to suffer from
thrashing. If this happens a lot or is clearly the cause of the slowdowns
you see then additional RAM will help.

  4. we run 1gig of ram here. when i open a large assembly of ours. we have
200 meg of ram left over.

if you just work in parts then 512 will do just fine. but if you make
large assemblies. you will need 1gig of ram.

    Don't you mean 1024 or 2048 RAM?

In addition to holding your assembly in RAM, some operation SW performs can
temporarily need a great deal more RAM. I consider 1024 to be the minimum.
