Can anyone tell me what the profile guide lines do when I attempt a loft.
(the 2 blue circles at the end of a straight line)

I adjust the lines and with varying success - and sometimes get a loft.

Its really trial and error but I dont know what I should be aiming for.

    Can anyone advise me?

They will help you to avoid or create twisted lofts. If you i.e. have
two square sketches to profile you can move one end of the guide line
and the result will be a twisted loft.
Also, if you have one square profile and the other has six sides you
can manipulate how the result should be by moving the blue "handles" on
    the guide lines.
