why does sw by default on opening a new document show Y axis up, Z forward
    and X to the right?

    Right hand coordinate system?

Why do you ask? What would you expect?

  3. If you don't like that, you can change the orientation (space bar, pick your
view, update standard views) and then save out as a new template. That way
the system will start as you desire.

Thanks, but that only changes how the view appears when a file is opened
(good start though). I find it bizarre and a PITA that the Y axis becomes
the "top" view whereas the rest of the world uses the Z axis. Normally one
finds the X&Y plane called Top (not Front) and the X&Z plane is called Front
not Top. Axis/planes are usually displayed in the positive orientation not
+X -Z making the parts look upsidedown when the top view is selected.

How can I re-define the named views? Do I have to delete or just rename
    them?

I'm going to ignore the RH coordinate system comment from the other poster.

  5. You can name them anything you want - Larry, Moe, Curly if that's the
desire. So, reorient to suit, and rename accordingly.
