    Hello,
i am a student and as part of a class I'm taking we received SolidWorks
Student Design Kit 2006 to work from home.

the problem is after successfully installing SolidWorks (from the
downloaded 1.2GB file) when i try to run SolidWorks the computer
"thinks" for a few seconds and then nothing happens as if i didn't open
    the app at all.
no logo, no window, no error, no log, solid.exe process appears for a
few seconds in the Task Manager and then disappears.

    Please help.
I'm using an LG LS55 notebook (512Mb RAM, 1.73 GHz, ATI Radeon Mobility
X300 with correct driver version - as listed at systematic), WinXP Pro
    SP2, IE7.

when running SolidRX to diagnose - everything is fine.
trying to run in 'Software OpenGL Mode' ends up just the same.

What is going on??? Please help - i need it to work for my assignments.

    Thank you,

    Guy.

did you have any anti-virus software running during the install? if
so, temporarily disable your anti-virus software and re-install.

    good luck!

    hey Bob,

    thanks for responding.

No Antivirus / Ad-ware / Firewall running during install.

all disabled, shut down. installation completed successfully, then AV
    restored.

    the problem still here.

i cannot seem to find any log that states where the problem is...

    any suggestions?

  4. Are you saying that when you try to run SW from inside SWRx with the
'Software OpenGL Mode' you still get the momentary issue and then nothing?
Have you tried the other switch that says to start without any of the
    options?

    Dude,

You have a borderline computer. Actually, its just the other side of the
line where I would expect it to work. I haven't seen a computer run
SolidWorks with 512 RAM for a while.

Also, that Radeon, I mean how often does this come up? Geez. "Correct"
    driver?

It may be this system simply cannot handle it. SolidWorks can use 512 MB
itself with only a couple moderate assemblies open. What is probably
happening is that you have Windows set to manage the page file, and your
disk is fragmented and not enough space to make a big enough page file
for anything at all to run.

Shut down all other software that isn't absolutely necessary, and yes,
that includes iTunes. Take that dancing dinosaur cursor off.

Disconnect from the network, turn off AV, turn off email, browser.
Clear all temp files and other junk. Free up as much space as you can.
Defrag hard drive. Set page file to both max and min of about 2 Gb. If
you don't have that much open space, write all your porn to DVDs and
clear it off your hard drive, that should free up a few gig.

If that doesn't work, try another computer.

How do you register that software? Have you done that? Is this a legal copy?

    Daisy.

One other thing to check. Make sure you have plenty of space on your
C: drive. This was an issue for me when I first installed swx on my
home computer. I forgot about this issue until this morning while
    taking a shower.

You have a borderline life. Please, do us all a favor and end it.
    Quickly.
    Who says, "geez"?

    You should try another world.
Student Copy. Student Copy. Student Copy.

Please show us what a flowerpot does when it abruptly stops on the
concrete after a 20 story drop. PLEASE.

    p.s. full of hate today.

Thank you all for trying.... but:

    Tiffany Hello,

yes, i do mean that. when i try to run SW from inside SWRx with the
either option (Software OpenGL / Bypass the Tools/Options settings) i
still get the momentary issue - an even shorter one than a regular
    launch attempt.

    John,

i am from Israel. setting Regional and Language Options to US didn't
    help.

    FlowerPot,

    Listen to Bob Zee.

    Bob,

i have about 11.5 GB of free HD space on C, 350 MB of free RAM when i
    try to run Solid.

i have to say that after trying to run SW there's the momentary issue,
later on the attempts are very short.
only a few hours later it appears as if the computer 'thinks' again
    before not doing nothing.

This is what SWRx is writing me when i run it:

    Manufacturer: ATI Technologies Inc.
    Card: MOBILITY RADEON X300 x86/SSE2
    Driver: 6.14.10.6067
Check that your card/driver combination is on the list of tested
    drivers at:
    http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/VideoCardTesting.html
You are using a currently supported operating system.

The system environmental variable named TEMP has been set.

Write access is set for the TEMP directory.

    System TEMP directory: 11.6 GB

The SolidWorks Backup Directory has not been set. Please set in
    Tools\Options\Backups.

The SolidWorks Journal file directory has not been set. Please set in
    Tools\Options\File Locations.

Drive C:\: 11.6 GB of free space
Drive D:\: 17.8 GB of free space

Total System Memory - 510 MB
This amount of RAM is acceptable for assemblies greater than 1000
components and parts greater than 300 features.
1GB or more is recommended for assemblies with greater than 2500
components and parts greater than 1000 features.
Free System Memory - 364 MB
You should have sufficient free physical RAM to run SolidWorks
effectively. If you exceed the physical RAM, your system performance
    will be seriously degraded.
Could not open the service pack database, the server may be busy,
    please try again later.

    SolidWorks is currently not running.

Toolbox is loaded on a local drive. This may not be an appropriate
location if the toolbox parts are shared. See the Installation Guides
    at
    http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/subscription/ServicePacks.html
    for more information.
