SolidWorks on a Mac

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by George Hobart, Dec 13, 2003.

  1. Does anyone have direct experience using SolidWorks on a Mac.
I would be interested in hearing if anyone has used any engineering
    software on a MAC.

Solid Works won't run on a Mac.....the only 3D cad software I've heard of
    for Mac is Vellum

I have run Solidworks 2000 in Virtual PC on a G3 Mac but it is too
    slow for me.

Given that VPC V7 will come out at the same time as the G5 Mac which
will now be clocked near 2.5 ghz in January, I'ld say that Solidworks
will likely run in that emulated OS environement, though its anyone's
    guess as to the speed.

There are about 3-4 solids CAD programs on the Mac, but none with the
capabilities and 3 rd party add-ons of SolidWorks. Ashlar, FormZ,
Solid Thinking and maybe a few more exist for the Mac.

Ashlar writes ACIS files, so there are tons and tons of 3rd party
programs and 3D solid modelers to read the files on the PC. Few are
    on the Mac, though.

i heard somewhere they were sticking pro e on the mac (probably a
crack at clawing some market share) but alas i bought a g5 (how
    excited i was)
just for rendering in maya i thought it would be oh so fast and er
    guess what

    it wasnt.

  5. Thanks Bo, We are going to use a dual 64-bit G-4 instead. I would be
interested if the SolidWorks dealership would send me a trial version
so I can test it out. I would like to see a decent CAD program like
SolidWorks run on the MACs native OS or the UNIX that it runs on. I
am new to the MACs, but you have to give them credit, their OS is very
stable. I am not talking about the type of Stability that Bill Gates
(MicroShaft) boasts about for his systems. This is real stability.
For the same reason most of us switched away from
Pro-Abortion to SolidWorks would be the reason to switch to the MAC in
the future if, they choose to write a MAC version.

Thanks Bo, We are going to use a dual 64-bit G-4 instead. I would be

The 64 bit is the G5 Mac CPU designation. Microsoft is going to
release their VirtualPC v7 in 3 weeks with enhanced OpenGL video card
support which ought to make 3D graphics "spin" much faster on a G5.

My guess is that SolidWorks would have to see a tsunami coming at them
in order to shift to Unix. The only possibility I see is if Microsoft
finally figured they were going to get left out if they did NOT adopt
a Unix core. Unix, Linux, & Mac OS are indeed making waves. Given
Bill Gates propensities from the past, the Unix option doesn't seem
good. But if Gates sees himself left out because Unix users are
expanding & serious Applications are being done in Unix, who knows
what Bill might be forced to do?

Meanwhile, I use SolidWorks and am ordering an upgrade for my Ashlar
and use both a Mac and a PC.
