  3. You can close a 3D sketch with either a rebuild or by clicking on the 3D
    sketch button on the toolbar.

It's funny you should say that. Yes, Jon comes off as a guy who is
hell-bent to promote VX, almost to a fault.

You, on the other hand, do yourself a huge disservice by posting mostly
noise and BS. You mostly add noise to conversations and manage to come off
as some sort of a lunatic who has nothing better to do with his life than to
chase down any and all of Jon's messages and barrage him with senseless
    attacks.

Surely your life has more important things to focus on than this quest.
Life is too short brother, don't use the time to dwell on negativity.
Remember, your focus determines your reality.

BTW, don't be offended if I don't reply to whatever your answer might be to
this. For me, it isn't worth spending any more time on this than what I
just did. It simply not worth my focus.

You read the above and do some thinking. If you get it. Great! If you
    don't. Well. You don't.

Cliff noted the absence of Unigraphics and I too wonder why it was left
    out?

    Not UG?

I was referring to 3rd party add-ins to extend the basic surfacing of
    SolidWorks.

Evaluating 3 new software systems was very time consuming. SolidWorks
does not count since I already use it on a daily basis. UGS was left
    out for no particular reason.

Isn't UGS beyond the $20,000 range. I thought it was closer to 30,000
    to get started.

  11. It depends on what you buy and how hungry the sales people are. As I recall,
we were quoted just under $20K for seats capable of doing mechanical design
and surfacing. That was just before the end of the year, when everyone was
hustling their hardest to make sales.

just out of curiousity, is LARGE bigger or smaller than "enormous"

That's an interesting question. Distionary.com might be able to help.

I have never heard of users complain that SolidWorks is not handling
"enormous assemblies" well. I only hear them compain about "large
    assemblies".

I don't know if there are a formal order of magnitude definitions,
    here's my guess:
    1 part - Nodal Assembly
    10 parts - Small Assembly
    100 parts - Medium Assembly
    1,000 parts - Large Assembly
    10,000 parts - Enormous Assembly
    100,000 parts - Gigantic Assembly
    1,000,000 parts - Ginormous Assembly

    <sheesh>

How many entities in each part?
    How complex are they?

    How many disks/filesystems/network issues are
    involved?

Is each part involved at it's *minimum* database size?

How much database space is used by other things?
    How many are themselves assemblies?

(BTW, What happens if an assembly is at some level recursive?)

  17. No, we haven't gone anywhere. We're too busy fighting SolidWorks to take the
time to figure out how to replace it. Catia is still looking best, but it
doesn't seem to be as much better than SW as we hoped. We're not sure we can
get the huge productivity increase we need to justify the added money.

What kind of stuff do you do?
New job here so stuck using UG for the time being while using
Solidworks for contract work at my old employer. UGs no picnic but I
guess it may depend on what you're doing.

  19. Hand-held computers. SolidWorks has a hard time generating good "swoopy"
shapes and a harder time generating good plastic parts from the swoopy
    outside surfaces.
Which version of UG are you using? NX3 seems to have a nicer interface than
NX2, but we weren't impressed with either. It seemed like they hadn't really
tried to minimize the number of mouse picks required enough. Yes, the
software has more choices available than SolidWorks, so there are bound to
be more clicks required, but it often seemed that choices were required that
could have been figured out from the context.

UG also seems to want to keep the "old" users happy, by never throwing away
a function or a way to get to it. Menus get really complex and functions get
very hard to find. We watched a demo by a fellow who seemed to be very
knowledgeable and it took him several tries and quite a few seconds to find
one of his supposedly favorite functions.

    What are you doing?
Which specific "not a picnic" items?

    Just curious.
