Slow printing to Color Laser

We are trying out a Kyocera FS-8000c Color laser printer. I set up a drawing
with an aerial photo to run test plots (11x17 sheet size). The company sent
2 reps to set it up and our network admin. spent some time trying to tweak
    the printer.

I sent a plot to our HP 500 Designjet plotter which took only seconds to
dump to the plotter. The plot spool file was 2.67 MB. (plotter is connected
to a jetdirect 42+HPGL Card). The same plot when sent to the laser printer
was 58.4 MB and took about 5 min to dump to the spooler, and then another
5-10 min to print. (Laser printer is connected via standard tcp/ip port,
    with 64 MB memory installed).

Needless to say, the performance of the printer is a drawback. Is this what
we can expect from all color lasers? Is there some driver or settings that
we should be using that will give us significant improvements? I know that
more memory on the printer should help the performance on the printer end,
but that should not help autocad to process and dump it to the printer,
    should it?

The laser is set to print at 600x600, with Page Description Language (PDL)
set to PCL 5c, high quality mode.
