    It's probably very simple ...

Let's say I need to create a ruler on a surface. I created a sketch with 1 inch piece
and now want to propagate it further.

What is the best way to do it?

Patterning is a very typical way to produce that 1" piece 12 times (a 1 ft.
ruler). After you've created the 1" long piece, select 'Linear pattern' (looks
like 6 stand offs). Give it 1 for Spacing and 12 for Instances = 12 times 1"
instances or a one foot ruler.

'Linear pattern' can pattern: Features, Faces and Bodies.
I want to pattern a part of the sketch.
    Is it possible?

  4. Yes, look in your help file index under Patterns -> Sketches

  5. As Bill pointed out, patterning in a sketch is possible. However the user
interface is not as intuitive or as flexible as patterning in the part or
assembly level. And patterning at the part or assembly level is more
efficient. Your rebuild times are going to be quite a bit higher if you have
a large number of patterned bits in a sketch vs. the same number of
    patterned features, faces or bodies.

  6. A side TIP that could be easily missed.(I didn't know about it for some
time). A sketch pattern can be edited with the origional dialogue by
selecting one of the entities and right clicking the Pattern constraint that
comes up on the right, in the drop down menue you have the option to edit
the pattern. Makes sketch patterns a little more forgiving.
