I work for a civil eng company and when we draw chevrons we at present off
set a filled closed polyline and trim down to size.

How can I define a line type to have a 0.8m solid bar on a 45deg angle and
    then a gap of 1.7m

    ie / / / / / / / / / (but starting with 0 heigh and finishing with
    more)

the variable being the line will start with width 0 and end somewhere around
    2m depending on the case.

Is this the best way to go about it or is there a more obvious answer wheich
    I can't see?

Can you post a graphic sample of what you are interested in?

That part can be done a couple of ways (both are complex linetypes). The linetype can be defined with a "SHAPE" defined in a custom SHX file, or a text character "/" with a specific filled font. DEVELOPER HELP has an excellent explanation of the linetype definition process.

It sounds like you want a variable linetype scale over the length of the line. IF that's the case, I think you may be out of luck.

    Ray,

I already have a custom hatch pattern that makes that shape. its sized for
pennsylvania DOT specs, but could be modified if you need different.

if there is an interest, i will post to the customer files
