Selecting planes on hole wizard

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by Nathan Feculak, Mar 2, 2004.

  1. On one of my hole wizard holes it lost the plane for the sketch, is it
possible to reselect the plane for a hole wizard sketch with out reinserting
the hole wizard. I'm using SW 03 sp 5.0

    Thanks Nathan

    Nathan,

As far as I know, there is no way to reassign a plane to an orphaned
hole wizard sketch in SolidWorks 2003 (or earlier). There, of course,
are also times when it's far easier to simply move such a hole from
one feature's face to another without having to recreate it when the
    design of a part changes.

I don't understand why the behavior ever was different from the
sketches associated with other types of features, but if you upgrade
    to SolidWorks 2004
the ability to reassign is NOW there! (at least in SP2.1)

Nathan -- this functionality is not available in 2003 or earlier -- however the work around is to select the holewizard hole in the feature tree -- click, hold, & hold shift while draging the feature to the face you want it on in the 3d area. If that does not work you can try CTRL+ drag which will copy instead of move like shift+drag does.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks,

Steve your a genius, where did you find this documented. We have
struggled with this BUG since SWX97 and this is the first time I have
heard of any work around. Just tried it and works great.
Buy you a pint in the bar.

    Cheers

Thanks for the kudos! it was I either heard here in the newsgroup a VERY
long time ago, or in the knowledge base, or what I really think it was is
something I remembered from the essentials training class doing the ratchet
exercise -- ctrl+drag copies features & shift drag would move them from face
to face. basically the shift+drag is the same thing as right click "change
sketch plane" -- So it only made sense that shift drag would work when I
found that the right click was a limitation. It feels like it has been a
long time since I have used that functionality now that we can use the
"change sketch plane". Which one worked for you the ctrl+drag or the
    shift+drag or both?

Are You saying that You can't change sketch plane for the hole wizard hole
in 2003?....or am I missing something here.....I tried it here on both my
machines with 2003 Sp 4 ....couldn't delete the plane or get the skecht off
    the plane on purpose....so I couldn't try to reassign a orphan hole.....but
moving the sketch from plane to plane or plane to face is no problem

When the placement sketch of a hole wiz hole was a 2D sketch, there was no
direct option for "edit sketch plane". I usually used the "move/resize
features" tool to drag a hole to a new face, but you couldn't drag it to a
    new plane.

Yepp...but this was a more or less a question about editing sketch planes in
SW 03 Sp5...even though it was an orphan hole....I tried editing hole wizard
hole sketch planes in 2003 sp4 and it works fine here..... no problem at
all....so ...is it the when the hole becomes orphane, the problem starts in
    2003
To be honest ...I can't really see any difference here between 03 Sp4 and
    04 Sp2.1

You know you maybe right -- we may all have our software versions confused.
The more I think about it I do believe that this functionality was
introduced in 2003 not 2004 like I had thought. So then the limitation is
in 2001+ where users cannot change the sketch plane of holewizard holes.
Either way there appears to be multiple work arounds for that issue back
then. I just recently uninstalled 2003 & am solely using 2004 so I am
unable to test this to know for sure when it was introduced.

Thanks -- sorry for any confusion,
