searching dgn files for text

Is there a utility or program out there which will search dgn files for text
strings and generate a file list when a given text string is found?

V7 or V8?

Are you looking for a Windows utility, or do you want to run this from
inside MicroStation?

 

V7 at this point,
running from windows

Because your using V7 its actually easier and you can do it to whole
directories via dos because in V7 you can use EdG which comes with V7.
You can also tell it to change or remove elements etc, go to Bentley web
site and look up how to use EdG.
From SE Help I got "See "EdG" in Chapter 10 in the Administrator's Guide."
There is this guide for V7 as a pdf on the bentley select docs its around
2.5 meg download.

You should be able to use Windows Search; ust remember to fill in the
"Containing text field" (Win2k), or the (I think) Options tab for Win
NT.

V7 stores plain text, so any text-search utility should work. Tools based
generically on 'grep' will help you find files that contain a particular
string.

I'm fond of TextPad ( www.TextPad.com ), because not only can it search
multiple files, but also it can capture the result into a page of plain text
that you can browse.

 

Are you asking about inside the design plain or file names?
My last post regarding EdG was talking searching entire directories of
designs for text elements strings inside the design planes not just file
names.

 

Looking for text strings inside the dgn file.
I am assuming that Jon's recommended "TextPad" was able to search inside the
dgn files for the text string. The searching would be done by an manager
who does not know how to run EDG.
