    Hi,

I was hoping to find a non-Autocad-related tool that would simply list
the names of files in which specified part numbers would be found.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Bob

windows explorer. you can search file contents, and it's
    autocad-unrelated.

    Ben,
extract data from a drawing, without the need to use AutoCad?

The first solution that leaps to my mind is Columbus
    (http://www.oasys-software.com/products/document_management/columbus/),
you can read drawing attributed data, block references and Xrefs
without having AutoCad, you can also view the drawing files. It also
    supports many other file formats.

Another possible would be to request .dwf files in place of drawing
(.dwg) files, you can then view them with the free DWF Viewer from
    AutoDesk.

    Hope this helps.
