    Given the performance of the machines sold these days, I usually
    consider developer time more important than runtime performance; on the
    other side, I come from a Common Lisp background, where function calls
    are reasonably fast, and the compilers usually can inline these small
    functions, anyway.

    On a larger program I wrote, the average length of functions was about
    14 code lines; I believe this is fairly typical in CL programming.
