.reg file & path variable problem

I replied to a couple of previous posts, but thought a new post might catch more attention. I used .reg files in R2002 to customize specific portions of users' AutoCAD profiles. I maintained a standard .arg file and applied customizations to individualized profiles by merging in only specific portions. In R2004, I am not able to do so because merging the .reg file raises havoc with the path information wherever environment variables are found. Has anyone found a way around this? I was thinking that using vlisp to write specific information to the Registry might be worth trying, but maybe that will work no differently than merging the .reg file. Does anyone know? Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated !!!!
