Read Only Damaged Files ?

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by Jason Piercey, Jan 16, 2004.

  1. Doing a bit of archiving on some old jobs today, and have
this one project that 2 of 6 files I can't open in AutoCAD
or copy the file to a new folder.

When I try and open them AutoCAD tells me the drawing
file is read only (which it is not) "Do you want to open as
read only?" I say yes, then I get prompted with a "Drawing
    File is not valid"

Anyone ever run into anything similar? or know what I might
be able to do to get these recovered?

    Already tried:
    inserting into a new file
    using recover

    Other ideas?

Yes I have run into this a lot of times with dwgs on a floppy more than on a
    hard drive.
One idea is get a copy of that "opensource" cad program and see if that will
open it, or sent it do someone that has it to try first.

  3. Thanks for the suggestion, Murph. Hmm... now to find
    someone with that program......

  4. You say you can't copy the file to another folder.

    Is that with AutoCAD open?

  5. AutoCAD closed or open, doesn't matter.

My first attempt was just copying a folder from our
server to my local drive so I can burn the data to CD.
During the copy process I received an error...
"File in use" type of thing which made me look closer
at the files, discovered they were corrupted.

  6. If you're getting that error when AutoCAD is not
running, you need to make sure that there's no
Acad.exe process in your process list. If there
is, then it means that AutoCAD didn't shut down
after it was last used, and it may have a lock
    on the file.

Otherwise, you shouldn't be seeing this error unless
some other process on your or another machine, has
    the file locked.

  7. The thing is, these files are 5 years old. Haven't worked
on them in some time (1998). They are just sittin' on the
server waiting to be archived. So, I doubt there would be
any lock on the files from AutoCAD. Not sure what other
    application could be locking them.

  9. Thanks for the offer, Randy. I can't copy or move
these files which presents a bit of a problem for
    others to try and help.

Sounds like the files are definetly Blitzed. If the server (that you copied from) has a regular 'backup' scenerio, you might want to 'go back in time' and try to recover from disk/tape.

  13. What type of server (I'm assuming a server) are the files on? Has the server
been rebooted since this problem cropped up? Win2k servers have file lock
    problems once in a while.

  14. Found the solution! Seems the ownership of the files
(Win2K pro) was set incorrectly. Once I changed
the ownership to match the other files, all is well.

    Thanks for the ideas, folks.
