we are looking for a printer that will do decent 11x17's and at times letter
size prints- for check sets and such- we would like it to have a dual paper
feed setup so we don't have to shuffle paper in and out-

we now have an older hp1220c inkjet and it is o.k.- other than the paper
    shuffle issue-

it looks like the newer hp 9650 is about the same as the 1220- but still had
    the paper shuffling issue-

i explained that if we wanted the duall feed for paper we were looking at
atleast 1000$ and after loking on the xerox website i see it might be more
    like 2500-3000

    any thoughts or advice...

find an old reconditioned HP4V...best printer HP ever made and IMO was
discontinued because it lasted so long. I've had mine for almost 10 years
and it still prints perfectly, is fast, cartridges are still available, and,
with the addition of the optional lower paper tray, holds both 11x17 (or
    12x18) and 8 1/2 x 11 paper. I use it for 1/2 size submittals and they are
perfect. I actually bought a second reconditioned unit a couple of years ago
in case mine ever blinks out...

LOL, when we upgraded our office to 5si's I finageled and bought our 4V and
still use it at home. A real workhorse.

jd, you don't say if you need color or not, or even if you're considering
lasers (which is what a 4V is), when we upgraded our 1220, we bought a 1700
and are very happy with it, much, much faster.
We don't have the second tray like Paul does, a sore point between me and
the owner, he thought it was too much! I think it's around a $100 add-on to
    a $400~$500 printer.
The 1700 is very economical on ink with separate cartridges for each color,
which are also separate and tube-fed to the print heads.
We use lasers for all our check plots and now only use the 1700 for color
    work.
