when I convert a 2D drawing with photo attached to PDF in my Solid
Edge gismo..it posts to my web sites in world class fashion.... very
    nice.

when I try posting a solid model saved as a PDF file the same way, it
is a bit grainy.. maybe 300 DPI or so... looks OK but doesnt knock yer
eyes out... I need the latter effect in order for my hot air/ smoke
    and baloney approach to work.

I was told that Adobe readers PDF Professional ($650) works like
greased lightening, easy to load 3D CAD in high resolution (1200 dpi
or more) to a web site.

is there a cheaper way thats easier? Easy is my key word.. Im not
very bright at any of this. How about JPEG or whatever you call
it...does any of that work well, load fast and look fantastic for this
    purpose.

.. My web site host www.networksolutions.com site builder says it
takes all kinds of files... I am in the process of trying to make one
of those fly. I think their site builder has its own issues as well,
choking on some files, and hit the wrong button and it reboots you or
turns yer computers desk top wall paper into an error notice or
    whatever.

    any comments will be appreciated.

ok ok...so I was in my motor home sitting outside a Kinko's when I
    typed this... inside kinko's was
a graphics babe set up at a lapnet station. with her cutting board etc
doing a brochure mock up for
    her graphics class. s

he has adobe reader professional PDF for 2 years now... the word is
its the best... has all kinds of capabilities,
the client can mark your PDF up and send it back to you, but cannot
edit or copy the file if you lock it and put water marks on it etc.

I found a new copy in the box from a seller on ebay with a 99% rating
    for $178... wish me luck.

OpenOffice (which is free) also seems to have some capabilities
but I cannot say if they are adequate nor how to install into/with SE.
But there's probably an OpenOffice support group & docs?

If You're about to post a 3D model as pdf You will need Adobe Acrobat
3D, or else You're just posting a picture from Your 3D model.
Acrobat 3D files (pdf) can be viewed in Acrobat reader, but from what
I remember while testing, they grew in size quite rapidly.
Otherwise as Tick says pdf995 or PdfCreator works like a charm

SE provides only adobe acrobat PDF most basic version...no way to
    adjust the
DPI. low resolution on ED, superb otherwise.

VAR said 'adobe reader pro... that seems to be the standard.

I forgot to check that, but after the babe I met at kinko's showed me
    her
adobe pro.. I dont thing you would find it as an add-in anywhere, it
    is
a major piece of software by itself.

Remember that nearly all PDF generators function as virtual printers.
The PDF is a virtual print (actually a close cousin to a postscript
file). Resolution is controlled at the print menu.

Also, postscript and PDF handle font, vector, and raster objects.
Resolution setting usually only affects raster portions, and font and
vector items retain fidelity, so long as they are not converted to
    raster blobs.

    Not sure:

    http://labs.solidworks.com/

Take a look at Presentation studio (free dl from SW labs):
Quote: "You've created the perfect model... Now present it to the world!
Generate dynamic 3D PDFs with just a couple of clicks using Presentation
    Studio."

I think it needs SW09. I never tried it for that reason. If you do (try it),
    tell us what you think.

Unbelievable ......Had it installed since a while back and totally
forgot about it. Well .....didn't play that long with but made a few
tests. Seems to not transfer real view graphics....looks a bit
plastic. You can spin it around and zoom, lay out predefined views and
if I recall it right You could even animate an exploded view, but I
never got that one working. Different options in render mode (not
    photorendering)
I'll look into it again. If You're intersted I can send You and
    example file.

I think You misunderstood this......Presentation Studio works as an
addin to SolidWorks. If You wanna produce 3D pdf files from Solid Edge
I think You will need Adobe Acrobat 3D which is different from Adobe
Acrobat Pro, no matter if it's 8 or 9. Acrobat Pro will only publish
ordinary pdf files (pictures). Anyhow....both pdf's from either
Presentation Sudio or Acrbat 3D can be viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader,
which is totally free. Solid Works has one other thing though, called
3D Instant Website, which will allow You to upload Your 3D model to a
    SolidWorks server, where it
can be viewed for anyone You want for a period of time.

Maybe SolidEdge has something similar, I know nothing about that.

i understood that ultra slick pdf program was by and for SW only.. I
was just commenting on how nice
that would be.... software like that seamless and all is worth 500 or
so unless you get that freebie russian/chinese
    version.

SE has just a low resolution PDF maker.. so far at least... 3D
    models
look 'ok ish' but are not impressive at all. Id guess 300 dpi at
best,, no option for higher resolution or
    rotate or any of that.

Maintenance on SE sycch with the pipe and wire routhing programs is
$1,900 a year. how does that compare with SW?

Can't really compare as I'm in Sweden and our fees are a lot higher
than Yours. I pay $2,140 a year for SW Pro (without pipe and routing)

    I'm not sure I follow You here.....You say pdf-maker for 3D models,
    but no option for rotate.
What do You get then? Just a pdf-picture from Your model? If that so,
    try download a 30 day
trial version of Adobe Acrobat 3D. It will open 3D cad-files and save
    them as "rotatable" pdf's.

copies the screen apparently to static PDF file.. not so bad..but then
thats it... no rotate etc. and
    too low resolutio for 3D.

yes, thats what I did..but I boght the software on ebay, new from a
    99.5% rated vendor
for $178... . it should be fine but I dont know yet.
