Please Help with a Basic Extrude Problem

After making a sketch, suitable for extrusion, I convert it to a
polyline, using the pedit command, to make sure there are no openings in
the drawing. I verify that it is a polyline either with grips, or just
using the "erase" command to make sure that the entire sketch converts
to dotted lines. After this, many is the time I still am unable to
extrude. Even though I am positive that the drawing has been done
correctly, and I know that there are no openings, what am I missing
here? Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Additional you can try the pedit command. If you pick the polyline and you
see an option "close" then you have to close the polyline. Only if you see
the option "open" you can be sure that it is a closed shape. Or you can
check the status with the properties command: In the Misc section you find
"Closed" Yes or No.
If you are sure it is a closed polyline and you can not extrude it let me
see an example drawing.

Maybe it did EXTRUDE and your viewpoint didn't show it.

 

Another possibility I've encountered is when you have a polyline with two
identical line segments directly on top of each other, or if you've created
a polyline by joining lines selected with a window and there are two line
segments coming off a single vertex.. This is also the case if the polyline
crosses over itself at some point, making a loop. In this case you may have
a closed polyline that still won't extrude. If you're sure the latter two
possibilities aren't the case, try exploding the polyline, then used the
pedit command and pick one line segment (it will ask you if you want to
convert it to a polyline), then select each additional segment of the
polyline one at a time, NOT with a window or crossing. When you're done the
polyline should be closed (i.e., "Open" will be one of the options on the
command line).

Of course, at a certain point it just becomes easier to redraw the damn
thing.

..to simply this in a larger drawing, as you add segments to your "new"
polyline, make it wider so you can see what's what.

I change the color on the first line segment so that as each new segment
gets selected you can instantly see if it was added or not.
