    Hi all,

We are implementing pdmworks. A bit of history, we have always used a
6 digit sequential numbering system for parts, assemblies. All CAD
files are grouped into folders according to the first 3 digits, i.e.
\110 contains 110001 thru 110999. Our pdmworks consultant told us we
have to abandon that structure inside pdmworks. He wanted us to
organize by "projects" or family of parts, i.e. pulley, gears,
product1, etc. Is that really the only way to go? As far as I can
tell, his structure would allow us to assign access rights to users
according to projects. But, if we would like everyone to have access
to everything, does it really matter? Any input is welcome. We would
prefer to fix it early if necessary.

    Thanks,

    stephen

Prior Posts on PDMWorks in this group have covered a lot of ground on
philosophies of numbering systems in PDMWorks and a quick search ought
    to turn them up.

Some of the threads went into the 4-5 dozen comments as I recall
    earlier this year.

Well, it is not quite a numbering system question. We already have a
numbering system. It is more about how to best setup the "project"
folders in pdmworks. I searched for pdmworks before I posted and did
    not uncover anything.

    Maintain its structure, this very well. PdmW only manages the archives;
its revisions, accesses, references, etc, etc.

Observation: First you must register all the pieces in its corresponding
project, soon the assemblies and finally the drawings. For example your
you can have 3 projects: Pieces, Assemblies and Drawings. To this
intention, not to use the massive registry.

There are several philosophies to use when setting up a vault
structure. Making folders with just part numbers is no help at all.
There is no reason to do it and no benefit from doing that over just
putting all the docs into a single massive folder. Obviously, you can
    do whatever you want.

I wrote a post a week or two ago which outlined some basic strategies
(called Best Practice PDMWorks Project Layout).

Your PDMW guy was probably wrong to be so "absolute" about it (because
everyone and every company has different ways of working, and different
needs there really isn't much room for pushing opinions), but the
spirit of what he said was correct.
