Photo Real Challenge

Discussion in 'SolidWorks' started by Rob Rodriguez, Sep 25, 2006.

  1. Something else exciting is happening at www.robrodriguez.com for the month
of October. You may remember Mark Biasotti's post
    (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=245782574173) for the PhotoWorks
survey and most photo realistic image vote. A number of us asked for the
camera model used in that challenge to be posted publicly so the general CAD
community could give it a try. Unfortunately Mark wasn't able to release
    this model file.

A number of us wanted to do a similar challenge for the CAD/rendering
community so I have set up the Photo Real Challenge at my website (this
challenge is in no way affiliated with SolidWorks corporation).

The Photo Real Challenge is a contest to determine who can create the most
photorealistic image of the supplied SolidWorks model using any rendering
software available (you do not need to use PhotoWorks). The Photo Real
Challenge is similar to the PhotoWorks Rendering Contest in that you will
have approximately 25 days to create a rendering from the supplied model.
All submitted images for the Photo Real Challenge will be posted for a
voting period of 5 days. Voting will be done by site visitors and contest
participants. The rules for the Photo Real Challenge are different than the
PhotoWorks Rendering Contest and can be found at www.robrodriguez.com along
with the model for download. In addition to submitting an image all
entrants will be asked to supply their computer specs, rendering set up time
    and rendering processing (save) time.

Good idea, I look forward to the results.

Don't suppose you have the models in SolidWorks 2006?

    Hi John,

Unfortunately no. Jeff converted and created the assembly in SW 2007.
I maybe be able to get the Maxwell Studio file though (can't remeber
the extension?) Would this help you?

John - I can download it and send you an mxs file with a SW texture
applied to all the parts so you can then reset the textures and maps
in Studio to how you want them.

Rob - if I understand the rules coorrectly , all we can alter in the
assembly is the light positions, and depth of field, and background
image. Can we alter the floor material?

The materials must be the same , but I assume by that we must stick to
the spirit of the contest in the sense that we can alter the textures,
roughness ect of the material - becuase if we are using software other
than Photoworks, we will be using new materials that will not be the
    same.

Any Post Production allowed ? - I assume not .

    Its a 6mb zipped file - email OK ?

I have various standard SW "Pattern" textures to the parts in the
assembly. I have added no maxwell materials in the SW plugin. You
will have to choose and add your own in Studio. If this does not work
    satisfactorily let me know.

Will also have to bump up the res to the rules. If you want me to add
any lights let me know and I will add them and you can update you mxs
    file by importing them later.

Let me kow if the email arrives OK. Going out now

    Jonathan,

Correct, the assembly should stay intact "as is". You can use any
lighting set up and adjust the depth of field. You can alter the
background image and floor material but they should have a "gray"
    appearance like the sample rendering.

Same with the materials. The materials should look like chrome, red
plastic, black plastic, silver plastic, etc. You need to follow the
colors of the sample image but you can use any material settings you
like to achieve the most realistic look.

    No post processing.

The ultimate goal is to be able to compare "similar" images from a
variety of softwares and see how they match up against one another.
To take this a step further I'm asking for the other information
(computer specs, processing time, etc) so we can also get a sense of
the work and (or) time involved to create the image in with each
    software.
