I just ran into another significant bug today in PDMW.
There are 3 separate issues related to working copy.

    1) Using "working copy" renders "as built" useless (this is a major issue
for those of you taking notes).
For this exercise PDMW option to retrieve Latest Versions is checked.
Steps to reproduce are as follows.

    - check in a sub-assy at Rev A with all components at Rev A
    - check in the same sub-assy and one component at Rev A+
    - check in the same sub-assy and one component at Rev B
    - check out sub-assy "As Built" Rev A
Notice that the one component (part) at Rev B did not change as it should
    have.

    2) When "rolling back" a component (Rev B) to the previous revision (Rev A)
AND where a working copy was used (A+), then upon checking component back in
at a working copy user gets an error, cannot check in.
Steps to reproduce are as follows.

    - check in part at Rev A
    - check in part at Rev A+
    - check in part at Rev B
    - delete/roll back to Rev A (roll back to working copy not an option)
    - check in part at Rev A+ ("Vault Error: 50")
This final step is required by us as the document must be signed off before
    checking in at Rev B

    3) Revision Scheme not followed when checking in.
For this exercise Revision Scheme set as follows.
    Primary - Listing, X1, X2, X3, X4, etc....
    Secondary - Listing, A, B, C, D, etc... (the usual letters omitted)
    Tertiary - Not used.
    Sequential Revisioning checked.
Steps to reproduce are as follows.

    - check in part at Rev A
    - save part, check in again. by default Rev B is now set for part to be
checked in. so far so good. do not check in yet & leave check in dialog
    box open.
    - in check in dialog box, select the Revision column. use the drop down
selector at top of dialog box and select working copy. what did you get?
you should have got Rev A+ but instead you get Rev A. leave check in dialog
    box open.

    Let's continue
    - in check in dialog box, select Revision column again. use the drop down
selector at top of dialog box and select next secondary revision. what did
you get? you should have got Rev B but instead you get Rev A+. leave check
    in dialog box open.

    - in check in dialog box, select Revision column again. use the drop down
selector at top of dialog box and select next primary revision. what did
you get? you should have got an error but instead you get Rev B.

The following was posted on the Solidworks forum. I've provided a link to
the document and response from my VAR.

First, I can't believe no one else is complaining about the check out & in
    dialog box anomalies.

Second, I'd like to start out by saying I have 3+ years of administering and
using PDMW. None of the issues listed on the attached pdf were encountered
    in PDMW 2005.

Although some of the issues listed may appear to be due to Lifecycle
settings, I can assure you our settings are identical to PDMW 2005.

In PDMW 2006 a major change was incorporated into Lifecycle functionality.
The Lifecycle option "Control document access using status" was introduced
and has had a significant effect on how we use PDMW. I can't stress enough
how this change has disrupted our day to day usage of PDMW.

Overall we applaud the "spreadsheet" type check in / check out dialog boxes.
However, the dialog boxes are where the majority of the issues listed on the
    attached pdf originate.
    ---

I can't even begin to convey my level of discontent.

    Regards,
    Kenneth

  6. I see the SW SP 4.1 service pack posted on 4/19/2006 and have it already
installed but I do not see anything to do with PDMW. On another note, when
you click on the "fixed SPR's" html it also lists fixes in Service pack 5.0
    ?????

You have it backwards. Update the vault first. After which, the next time
a user logs into vault he/she will be prompted to update local client. The
    client will be updated automatically.

You could also update client manually.

  10. Ya but what file do I use to update the vault?? The update just goes and
    does it's thing with SW.

Man, I'm feeling really stupid here. As in most PDMW installs my vault is on
a central server on the network. The PDMW help says the following:

    To update the PDMWorks server:

1.. Double-click the file you downloaded from the web, pdmwserver.exe, or
insert Disk1 into the CD drive.

2.. Follow the on-screen instructions until you get to the Upgrade
Installation dialog box. The installer detects a previous installation and
    prepares to upgrade.

3.. Click Next to upgrade, then follow the on-screen instructions to
    complete the upgrade.

Where am I getting this file from? if I try and use the SP file downloaded
from the web it tries to do a SW upgrade. What am I missing ???

to update vault use "pdmwserver.exe" (self-extracting zip file). this must
be done at the vault locally (i.e. on the server).

why the hell we have to execute 5 different files and extract a zip file
(help) to update a single instance of a service pack is beyond me. it
    definitely suks.

file ("pdmwserver.exe") is on web site, remember? are you feeling ok?

maybe it's your bifocal's, are you wearing them? ;)

once you select SolidWorks 2006 SP4.1 04/19/2006 select the version of
solidworks that you own ie pro or premium Pdmworks is listed as step 3
required updates select PDMWorks Server and you will get the current version
of PDMworks. If you are licensed for any of the other products listed
(Cosmos ect.) you will need to download those separately.
