I'm planing to buy a new P4 2.8 system and would like some advice on picking
a motherboard. For the OS I'll be running XP pro. Some of the info I've
found shows that a 865PE will often perform as well as or better than an 875
Chip using the ProE SPEC performance test. I haven't found much on SW tests.
Do any of you real world SW users think I would be giving up much
performance or functionally by going to an 865PE rather than the 875P? Any
    input welcome.

  2. Not sure if this is any help but..

I have a ASUS 875 board with Win2000 and imho, it's pretty stable.
My bro has the ASUS 865 with XP and he's happy with it.
(we both put together our own systems)

So, between the two of us, we're kind of picky.. either are very good.

As far as I know,.. the 875 board does have something over the 865,
better support for 8X AGP. So, if you are getting a 8X card like the
nVidia Quadro FX 500 card, the 875 maybe worth it (that would be and was
my sole reason for getting the 875).

But, the 865 boards (maybe due to licensing) have some added features
the 875 does not.. so.. if the difference between the two is a blur to
you,.. cost (875, $120) and speed (865, $80, and is slightly faster in
only a few cases).... The 865 is actually the better deal but we are
only talking $40 plus a faster 8X graphix card (+$150)... I would think
most users could recoup that cost in less than a month?

From what I've read, the 865 boards has been very popular and most of
the users are on XP so... it may be a coin toss if you are not really
    into speed?

Not sure about the 865 board but I built and am using the P4C800-E Deluxe
875 chip asus board with a 3.0 800 Mhz CPU and a gig of Corsair TWINX 3200
matched pair memory sticks on XP pro.............it flies solid as a rock.
Good solid video also helps along with a couple of SADA 10000 rpm drives.

  4. I've got the 875 chipset running a 3.0Ghz chip at home and a
QuadroFX1000. As far as I'm concerned, this is a bullet-proof MoBo and
have had abolutely no SWX related problems with it.
