When I click "open" I no longer get the dialogue box showing, I just get a
command line prompt asking me for the name of the file to open. Is there any
way of restoring this box for "open"?

    Thank you

    Try these:
    cmddia should be 1
    filedia should be 1

Actually, CMDDIA has no effect on file dialogs.

Thanks, I'll try them both anyway.

Many people seem to believe that a command at the command prompt is the
only way to an end result. Often it works but very often, especially in the
case where one can't remember the command, just doing it by the menu is the
surest way of getting there. The most recent version of AutoCAD I have
dealings with is 2002 but I doubt if anything has changed. Go to tools,
options, system. Under general options you can set what you want for
    startup.

I looked hard at all the options in Tools-options but couldn't see the
correct tick box for this one, unless they name it something strange. It's
not the startup options I wanted but just opening another drawing after
already working on one, so not starting up. I agree with you, but couldn't
find this particular option anywhere, not even in the help.

The filedia=1 is the one that worked though. Thanks for your help.
