I heard a rumour that SWX are going to do away with dongles.
Can anyone shed any further light on this?

    Regards,

I heart the same and I'm positive it's true. It's only 5 months ago
since I upgraded my dongle to USB, which cost me € 275,- and for
    what??? F%$#%ers.

Each seat of SW now has to be activated thru SW websight and recieves a
license file, similar to how Windows Xp works now.

How would this work with PC's without an internet connection?

When you do the activation, it will generate a file the would need
emailed to SW. They will then send an activation file back and you use
this file to activate the program.

In New Zealand we had dongles up untill SolidWorks 2006. Does this not apply
    in the UK?

Does this mean that we won't be able to have a 'seat' at home along with the
    'seat' at work?

Dale's right. You get to activate a work system and a home system

They said that the activation was available in 2006 but not implemented
in most areas. NZ must have been the test area for this.

Just friggen great. Activation. Arrgh. I HATE activation. You are
automatically assumed to be a pirate until proven not.
