Does anybody here know if there are there any free programs available that
can scan your network and tell you the CPU and RAM specs of all of the
    computers that are connected?

If you have 25 nodes or less, try Network Inventory Navigator at
    http://www.alloy-software.com/
Will also report applications, network address, os, user and more.

Sadly, we have over 300 nodes...thanks, though.

While not free, Track-It http://blueocean.intuit.com/ does everything you
want and more. It also tracks all software, *every* component is the
computers, and includes a help desk and you can even track training. They
    have a demo available.

If you're kean on picking up scripting skills, there is no shortage of scripts to poll for inventory data like this. There are a lot of variables to consider in picking the best approach. Are the machines left on all the time? Do you have transients (laptops)? Do users have local admin rights? Is the network Windows NT 4.0 or 2000/2003 Active Directory? Do you already have scripting skills in a particular language (Kix, VBscript, Javascript, Perl, etc.)? and so on. With a better understanding of what you're dealing with (and what you have to deal with it) I'm sure the folks here can suggest some good strategies.

I can write a program to do it, I was just hoping that there was something
out there that is already written.
