a question for you "old timers" that have used many different cad
    programs....

is a guy that is proficient with Autocad qualified for a ProE position ? or
other programs , for that matter..
    TIA

Maybe, maybe not. A great many places that use AutoCAD do so, in part,
because it is widely taught and all they are after is a cad operator,
someone to operate the tool. Programs such as ProE are generally used by
engineers and designers. The difference being that one uses the tool to do
his job, the other's job is to operate the tool. What an employer is going
to be most concerned with is that you can do the job, as an engineer or
designer. If you can show him you have experience in cad, that will show
knowledge of basic concepts that can be applied to the tools they use. They
may prefer that you have experience in the cad program that they use but, as
there are so many, they generally realize that making that a requirement is
    unrealistic.
