when I am in a layout tab, and if my viewport is not locked, and I
click to go into model space, why does my veiwport automatically go to
zoom extents?(I am using Autocad 2004, if it makes a difference).

  2. UCSFOLLOW is probably set to 1. Try 0.

You need to set the UCSVP to 0 (UCS per ViewPort). Unfortunately, this
needs to be set in Paper Space, Model Space and for each Viewport (they
all carry their own UCSVP setting). It is a bug, it is annoying, this
is the only work around I have found.
