Can someone tell me why I can't get surfaces to render in my drawings?

Although a drawing will show a surface in wireframe, SolidWorks can not
render (shade) a part without "solid" geometry.

To work around this, you can simply create a
feature(Insert/Boss,Base/Thicken) with the surface and specify a sliver
    thin .001" thickness, for example.

I thought insert model items had an option to import surfaces & not just
dimensions? or were you talking about shading the drawing view & the
    surfaces do not shade?

hope this points you in the right direction
