Mechanical Parts & Trim Command

    Something really strange happens after I insert a mechanical part, such as a washer, nut or bolt into a dwg. (2004 Mechanical)
    When I select a few lines to be trimmed (anywhere in the drawing) and press enter they are no longer highlighted, they revert back to being solid lines.
    I can trim the lines but cannot see if the line has been trimmed until I press return again. Very frustrating. Am I missing some kind of setting in the Options?
    I think I've tried everything.
    The trim command works fine up until I insert the mechanical part.
    Has anyone else experience anything similar to this?
