are mechanical desktop and autodesk inventor separate packages or just
    one got renamed while upgrading?
what is the story behind renaming or lanching two separate solid
modeing packages(as whatever the case may be)?

    regards,
    Yogesh Joshi

PS : I posted the same message a few days back on the related inventor
group but have no reply till now.

  2. Inventor is very very different to Mechanical Desktop. Both have their
    advantages and disadvantages.

Mechanical Desktop was an enhancement / evolution of AutoCAD
capabilities. Inventor is a brand new package unrelated to anything
else AutoDesk has offered. Inventor is intended to compete with
packages like SolidWorks and Solid Edge, which both make Mechanical
Desktop seem like an expensive toy. Its user interface (UI) is a pretty
    fair knock-off of other products.

  5. In the next future (what is next future- one year or ten years, nobody
doesn't know it) Mechanical Desktop will be substituted by Inventor.
Currently MDT is in the package of Inventor.
If you need more informations about MDT klick at the "Search" button and
    search for "Mechanical Desktop".

If you need more informations about MDT klick at the "Search" button and
The confusion was never about " What is MDT?" but about "are MDT and
Inventor same or not?" and it hardly requires any great deductive mind
to deduce that I would have searched for the same question first and
then only I turned to post this question in the newsgroup.
Now you search for "Mechanical Desktop" and you will be surprised to
see *this thread* at the top which certainly means that there is not
enough material available related to MDT .Forget about the searching
for difference between Inventor and MDT.

  7. I wrote in an earlier posting: it's not the same.
Oh, a misunderstandig I guess. Because MDT is not listed in the product list
at Autodesks web (I guess Autodesk wants to force the users attention to
Inventor) I told you that you can find informations about MDT at other
places at Autodesks web site (not here in the ng). It was only a hint - not
    less and not more.
Yes, forget it. MDT and Inventor are two absolutely unrelated and different
products and the list of differences would be endless.

Today I got to see both the packages MDT and Inventor.Instantly I
realized the confusion Autodesk is in , Since I am working on a
project which requires studies of almost all of the available MCAD
software , and studied proe, sw before.
The MDT introduces the parametric concept and surely autodesk had to
develop this package so as to compete with the then sprading
Parametric design market revolutionized by PTC.
So is the case with the Inventor. The motivation behind this software
is clearly SW from Dassault which is rich in its user interface and
one can learn it quickly as almost everything in SW becomes trivial
and so easy.(extrusion, sweep and loft operation to name a few).
The study of autocad,MDT and Inventor in the same order will give
oneself the insight into the history of development of CAD and the
logical explaination of why the other software came into being.(eg.
autocad : - 2D drafting,No parametric no constraint based with little
    bit of 3d operations,
MDT : -3D drafting but not solid modeling.
    Inventor : a solid modeler.)
