When installing the first part into an assembly, you can automatically
coincide the origins of the first part with the assembly. Is there a way to
re-fix that part so that their origins are coincident once you set it to
    float?

drag the part into the assy but instead of letting go in the design area
drag to the origin in the FMT and let go. You will see it jump to origin to
    origin.

right click to float. right click to fix

Mate the 3 main plaes together (i.e. Front with Front, Right with
Right, and Top with Top). Now delete those mates. Then RMB the
component (Tree or Graphics Area) and choose Fix.
