    TOP,

Seemed simple enough, took about 20 minutes this morning.
7 surfaces, some circular patterning and knit into a solid.
How do I submit the results?

    Nice. Obviously too easy. :)

Just tell this idiot how to post or send the file, I'd be glad to show
you. I'm real ignorant when it comes to how these groups operate, I
    usually just a lurker.

Not too easy, I think. At least I had to think a lot... I guess my model is
far from optimal, since I had to use three axes, two planes, a mirror and
    three circular patterns... 'duh!

But I did not use any equations, though, and the model has only one
    dimension.

  5. Just out of curiosity, how does one find out about these model challenges?
Not that I'm worthy, but it might help to improve my and my colleges skills.

    Keith,

We were beating the subject to death in the Golf Ball discussion. It
needed it's own outlet. Depending on interest and participation it will
either grow or fizzle. But it is just a newsgroup thing. In a way it
is a takeoff on the Model Mania that SW does at SWW, but at least for
this challenge the time taken is not as important as the technique used
    in the solution.

The two solutions offered so far are as different in approach as night
and day. And neither is obvious. So don't be afraid to try. This is a
head scratcher for most people and that is a good thing (if you have
    hair).

Paul has a vald email address in his messages. With that you can send him
Paul who? I'd like to attend, too; I sent email to TOP (is he Paul?) but I
    did not get any reply.

    Heikko,

I replied. I thought you wanted to participate. I got an email and I
think I sent a reply back.

Thanks, could you try to resend? Despite it's obvious non-junkiness the
message must have been caught by some junk filter, who knows.

    Dale,

OK, I figured out how to see peoples e-mail address in the forum, but
when I tried to send the file to you, it got kicked back as
    undeliverable.
A copy got to TOP OK, but he hasn't said much about the solutions
    offered.

I'm still studying them. We are getting ready for the NISWUG meeting
this week so I can't spend a lot of time until that is over.

I came up with yet another solution.

We should add a twist since it seems so easy to many people. How about
the ability to vary one or more of the edges and still have the same
    basic shape?

Got your model. One driving sketch, one dimension, no equations and
    only two lofts.

Can't wait to post all of them. Be patient.

HA! I finally beat Dale at one of Paul's games (he toasted me on the
dodecahedron a year or two ago)

Not counting sketches, I have a revolve, a cut extrude, and two
circular patterns. No equations, and (though it is a pain in the ass)
I used a dim for the revolve reference so I didn't need to add any
    axes.

I have three sketches, though if I were pressed I could do it with two.

    -Ed

Oh yeah - of course... I had to put in an offset surface for Paul's
requirement of a surface, though that is for judging reference and
doesn't really count towards the four features it takes to model the
    shape.

Shouldn't have posted so fast, I just saw that Heikki had a two-loft
solution later in the thread. I'd really like to see THAT one.
Congratulations, man... I am looking at the damn thing and still can't
see how you can get it out of only two lofts. And here I thought I
knew a little something about SWx...

The two lofts are the only sketch driven features. There is a little
more to it than that. This guy knows solid geometry.

By the way there is also a way to make this thing using folded
triangles. I haven't quite worked out how to get that in SWX though.

For a tie breaker I might have to use rebuild time.

    Ed,

It sounds like you have something interesting too. Can't wait to check
it into the official Model Challenge PDM system.

Now that made me nervous... I sent another model, since lofts are actually a
    bad, very bad idea...

It is kind of interesting how much a model like this can be optimized with
    some thinking.

    Dale,

I couldn't believe it when I saw it. If someone can do it in one
    feature they might beat you.

Sounds like I have to update my model. I think I can do it with one
sketch (total), but still have four solid features (revolve,
extrude-cut and two patterns) and no equations.
