Is there a way to lock drawings in place in model space. This would be very useful when using Xrefs. I don’t know a way of doing that. You can lock the layers but it is only for the main drawing. There were times that I wish that I had the ability to lock the drawings in place. This would be very useful for background drawings for doing electrical, mechanical, roof and floor framing. Not to mention a lot of other situations. By locking the drawings in place. You can still modify the drawing and it would still update to other drawings.

So this would be different from locking layers.

  2. Not really different. XRef your drawings to a layer to lock, e.g.
    MyXRefsLayer.

I really don't want to add an additional layer just for looking the drawing in place.

You do it by locking the layer on which the XREF resides. If you don't want to do it that way, then you're out of luck.
