    Hi,

does anyone use the LITE version of autocad? What are the main differences
    between the full version?

    greetings

It's not "LITE"; it's LT. And yes, many thousands of folks use it. It's the
scaled down version of full AutoCAD, and, other than the $3000 difference in
    price, differences include:

    No solid modeling capability.
No LISP, ARX or VBA customization without a third-party add-on.
    No non-rectangular viewport creation.

There are other differences, but the main advantage is that you get full
AutoCAD file compatibility for about 20% of the price.

    MSRP (USD):
    AutoCAD 2005 - $3750
    AutoCAD LT 2005 - $895

Prices for 2006 versions aren't yet posted on the Autodesk Web site.

    The LT stands for lite.

No, it doesn't. Never has. Never will. It's simply a designation that
Autodesk put on the product to differentiate if from "full" AutoCAD. The
"Lite" designation is a persistent urban legend with no basis in fact.

Talk to John Walker. That's what he calls it. I tend to believe him.

If you look a little deeper into the *actual* history of Autodesk, you'll
see that John Walker originally proposed a "Lite" version of AutoCAD along
about 1983-4. In that same time frame, Autodesk in stead published
AutoSketch in an attempt to capture the low-end market. When the scaled-down
version of AutoCAD was finally published, more than ten years later, it was
named "LT" and even though it shares two letters with "LiTe," no official
acknowledgement has ever been made by Autodesk that LT "stands for" Lite.

  9. Just my $0.02 worth, but I always thought the LT stood for "Limited Tools"

Other rumors have included "Less Than," "LapTop," and "Learning Tools."
According to Autodesk, none of these are correct.
