Lines are non coplanar

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by Jerry Gibbons, Apr 16, 2004.

  1. GRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr............. This is about to drive me crazy!!!

Sometimes, when I try to fillet two lines, the lines remain unchanged, and I
get "Lines are non coplanar. Select second object:" at the command prompt.
When I highlight both lines, then look at the Properties dialog box, the
thickness, start z, end z and delta z all show 0". I do notice that the
    delta z is greyed out.

I have tried the (Express Tools) Flatten command - nothing changes.

This is very inconsistant and unpredictable, but it happens enough to.....
    well, you know....

I figure this has to do with 3D drawing, and we don't do 3D. How do these
lines get to be "non coplanar", and how do I get them to be "coplanar"?
Better yet, how do I get ALL my linework to be "coplanar" all the time?
Probably (hopefully!) this is just a simple setting somewhere.

    Any input is appreciated!

This used to happen to me every now and then with AuotCAD14. The way I
fixed it was to use the MOVE command and grab one line by the endpoint and
move it to the endpoint on the other line, then try fillet.

    Jerry,
Sound like you still have 3D objects. I don't use full cad (or obviously
express tools) so I'm taking a shot in the dark that flatten will not
flatten unexploded blocks. You may need to explode these 3D objects then do
the flatten thing. Double check your file, flip your view so you're looking
at z-plan vertically, you should be able to detect the offending objects.

I've seen that sometimes, and it's possible that they aren't really at a z
of 0. Based upon your units setting, you may have AutoCAD rounding it off.
I'd select them again, and set them at 0, even though it seems they already
    are.

    It might be the solution.

Go ahead nad change the Z values to 0. it could be off less that you display unit precision.

Then again it could be an extrusion direction problem. One of the lines was created with a different UCS.

This usually happen when you try using "region or poly line edit" commands,
I have found out that most of the times you will have two lines stacked one
on top of the other, what I do is highlight both lines and just move one of
them with there grips and erase one of them and then try your command again.

  8. For this purpose i created a shortcut with the old-fashioned CHANGE command,
    like:
    _change;\prop;elevation;0;

    Works on all lines etc.

    Jerry,

look at the discussions at the following, it may help you out, or just do a search on '1e99' and pick up the thread from there.

I have also tried 'flatten' and had varying degrees of sucess, but the 1e99 trick worked better for me. You may still need to explode blocks though, i've not tried this as all my data was 3d poly's so blocks weren't an issue to me.

  10. Thanks, "owenr" for responding! This works better for us than anything
I've found. At least it seems to solve our immediate problem. Thanks AGAIN
    to everyone for your time!
