Sure, copy/paste is just another way of wblock/insert.

    1) Copy something to the clipboard
    2) Go to your temp directory (whatever is specified as your AutoCAD temporary files directory)
    3) Open the latest drawing which will be named something like A$C9BD12D6B.DWG

You will find what you just "copied to the clipboard" along with all the layer filters.

Wblock carries layer filters along for the ride too :-(

Loading several 500K files at a time shouldn't be a problem, though in A2K4
500K is still a fairly large file - especially for a fab drawing. These
must be some pretty complex drawings.

In the help system, look up the LAYOUTREGENCTL system variable. If you have
a lot of information in modelspace, and you tend not to jump from viewport
to viewport, then try setting layoutregenctl to 0, but read the help. It
describes what is happening with each possible setting.
Back in R12 I was a big Matrox fan, but now, I like NVidia much more. We
bought a G450 for one machine to compare with the NVidia based machines we
have (primarily interested in the dual monitor system) as have been
disappointed. NVidia's TwinView driver is much better than the G450's.
Aside from the dual monitor support, though, we really don't have any
    problem with the Matrox.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure what else you could change to solve this, but I
am reasonably certain the problem is not a core Acad issue. For whatever
    that is worth.

    Herman,

I can't help but wonder about your video ram. 32Mbytes doesn't seem like
very much spread across 4 hi-res monitors.
I think the video memory, at least if you are running hardware
accelleration, does more than just store the data for the pixels on screen.
What happens when you decrease the resolution/color depth?

Next time things start to slow down, pull up task manager and look at the
memory usage - first overall, on the Performance tab, then, by process on
the processes tab. My settings are similar to yours - 1GB ram, swap file
set to 4000 MB, though I am on Win XP Pro, which may make some difference.
I've never seen my page file usage go above about 50%. In the past (on
other machines) performance has really been a problem above about 50%.

    HTH,
    Mike

An example of the difference between the NVidia TwinView driver and Matrox's
offering is in their handling of dialog boxes. With the Matrox, most
dialogs pop up centered - smack dab on the interface between our two
monitors. With NVidia we can direct the dialog to a specific monitor, the
application's home monitor, or the cursor's monitor. This alone is enough
of a difference to me to put NVidia above Matrox.

Okay. Video memory shouldn't be the problem then.

I'm running a NVidia GeForce 4 TI 4600 with 128 Megs. Probably more than I
need, but it certainly hasn't caused me any problems (other than running
    SketchUp).

A quick search at Froogle brings up this site: http://tinyurl.com/2653o So
I would expect that you could get a reasonable card locally for under $100.
