    Jack,

I must be Friday, I still don't see any requirements for a ship's ladder
maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing. This will be a slope ladder between 60
to 75 deg's to gain access to a mechanical platform. we were going to use a
ladder with a cage but the company wants what they call a ship's ladder. I
looked and do not see any height restrictions or overall width restrictions
I need to reach approx. 19'-6" to of platform. This will be a steel ladder.

Thanks for previous help maybe I just being a dumbA** today.

    1915.72(b)(5)

The width between side rails at the base shall be not less than 11 1/2
inches for ladders 10 feet or less in length. For longer ladders this width
shall be increased at least 1/4 inch for each additional 2 feet in length.

Isn't this what your looking for? BTW - check the next standard too.

  11. Which Code? A ships ladder won't meet the North Carolina Code.

  12. Just to add to the confusion, you might take a look at the API650 (American
Petroleum Institute's standard for welded storage tanks). It includes some
pretty detailed specifications for ladders, platforms and walkways.
I sometimes work in "obscure" countries with vague codes - or none at all -
for these kind of things. In such cases I'll use the API650 - with the
    client's consent, off course.

  14. According to my recent disagreement with the NC Department of Insurance -
everything but your house is a place of public accommodation and all new
designs fall under the jurisdiction of Volume 11-c (Accessibility Code) and
a "ships ladder" doesn't meet the criteria for steps or ramps. If you use a
"ships ladder" there must be another accessible route for a handicap person
(wheelchair) to use in which case there is no restriction for a ships ladder
    design.

The NC Department of Insurance and some of these "jackasses" who review
plans have lost all traces of common sense!.
