JPG as a "background" file

I'd like to be able to import a JPG file and draw over it (trace it) and be
able to work above it without the JPG file getting selected as I work.

I have tried this with various settings but nothing obvious seems to work.

The AutoCAD "help" function has not been very.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Thanks for the reply.

I tried turning IMAGEFRAME off without any changes. It seems the JPG file
is in the drawing as an object and not an image. I was able to get to the
Image Manager but the JPG file was not listed (no images are listed) and I
could see no way to get an image into the drawing.

BTW, I am using AutoCAD LT 2005.

    From HELP
    =========================================
Because you select an image by clicking
its frame, setting IMAGEFRAME to Off
    prevents you from accidentally selecting
    an image.

I received an email answer that I will post here to help others looking to
    solve this same problem:

    "
I use ACLT2000, and it used to be that JPEGs and other raster images could
only be viewed in LT, but had to be brought in to the drawing file using a
full version of AutoCAD. Has this changed? If not, you are probably working
with an OLE object, in which case I have an easy answer. If you right click
on your image and get a menu that says "Cut, Copy, Clear, Undo, Selectable,
Bring to Front, Send to Back, Properties, Linked Document Object," then you
    have an OLE object.

Make a new layer that you will use only for the image object and make that
layer current. Then, right click on the object and select Copy. Right click
on the object again and select Clear - it will disappear (i.e., get
deleted). Then pull down the Edit menu and choose Paste. You have now in
effect moved the image object to your new layer. (An OLE object is always
located on the layer that is current when you bring the object in, and can't
be simply reassigned to a different layer, as is possible with most other
ACLT objects - you have to cut it out, make the layer you want it to be in
current, and paste it back into the drawing in the new layer.)

Then, right click on the newly pasted object (make sure it is at the size
you want it) and select Send to Back. Now, open the layer manager and lock
the layer the object is in, and change to the layer you want to draw in.

You will find that you are now unable to select the image object and it
always stays below what you are drawing. When you are done tracing it,
unlock the layer, right click on it and select Clear to delete it from the
    drawing."

I have not tried that but feel it will probably work.

My solution was a free program called SlingShot that I used to add an image
to an AutoCAD LT 2000 drawing and then worked on the file as an AutoCAD LT
2005 file. That seems to work OK.
