Is there a way to create a joined assembly without conbining the bodies. I
know you can save as a part but this doesn't ubdate. I want it to update.

I can't recall exactly which does which, but...

I got different results depending on whether I joined all bodies in a
single join feature or joined each body in a separate feature (SW2003).
    Worth an experiment.

Found the part I did this with. If I picked all of the bodies in a
single join feature, they remained separate.

What SP did you do it in If you recall. I am on 2004 sp4.2 and it doesn't
    seem to work that way.

They actually are touching, and I have looked at the options and none of
them seem to make a difference.

Nice method. I think I am going to go a completely different route on this
thing though. Thank you both for your time and effort.

Saving the assembly as a part will do what you are asking.

You see I know that that will save it out with separate bodies, but I want
to be able to change the origional part files and have the multi-body part
file change with them, and as of yet this method will not update. The
situation has been resolved, I ended up re-drawing all the parts in a
    single part file as multi-body.
