Intel vs. AMD with AutoCAD

Discussion in 'AutoCAD' started by THE REBAR GUY, Feb 4, 2005.

  1. Prolly been asked and answered many times on here before but here it is one
    more time.

which in your opinion is better for running AutoCAD 2005, Intel P4 or AMD
    Athlon?

Trying to spec out a new system and finding it hard to get answers on which
chip is better, or are they so close it doesn't matter. From what I've found
so far, AMD is cheaper, and all the vendors swear that it is faster than an
Intel. Always had Intel before, but since I wasn't the one writing the check
for previous systems, I wasn't as concerned.

rest of spec's will be as listed below...feel free to offer constructive
    advice. :)

    1 gig (2x512 chips) of DDR400-PC3200 RAM
    120 GB SATA 8MB HDD
    16x DVD-CDRW Dual Layer Burner
GeForce FX5700 256MB DDR 8X AGP video card
    Microsoft XP Pro
Mid Tower case with front slots for USB&Firewire - 480w Power supply.

    Thanks...

  2. I've been using AMD for years with no problems that I can attribute to
the CPU. There was an issue with the AMD K6 when they took the bus
speed up to 100MHz and Windows couldn't handle it, but no problems that
    I know of since.

Both AMD and Intel work well. Which is faster depends on what you're
doing. I buy AMD because of (1) price, (2) I like to support the
underdog, and (3) AMD pushed the envelope, and in my opinion is the
driver that has forced Intel and the industry to progress.

I'm running an Athlon 64 at the moment. No 64 bit OS in my office yet,
but I thought it better to buy a CPU that could move to a 64 bit OS
instead of having to upgrade again.

AMDs are cheaper for a reason. Questions come up here all the time as to
what system to get for cad. Autocad is not a high powered program. Anything
resonable will run it. Opperating system is far more important. Win 2000 or
XP work well. Anything from the Win 95, ME ect, stay away from.

I've built both Intel and AMD systems lately, Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz and Athlon
XP 3200. We have monster sized 3D models and we have to put 2 Gig of memory
in the boxes. If there is a speed difference, it is negligible.

If your building strictly a cad station (no games and such), don't waist
money on costly video cards. I just use low cost integrated mother boards
and these work fine. I tried the high end approach and the extra money spent
    was never realized.
